Christian Blood Cannot Be Ignored” — U.S. Lawmakers Renew Calls to Sanction Nigeria
Latest Update: Push to designate Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) gains momentum — but no formal State Department re-designation yet

Pressure is mounting in Washington for the U.S. State Department to (re)designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) under the International Religious Freedom Act — driven by repeated calls from the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), new congressional letters and bills, and heightened advocacy from faith-based organizations. Despite the crescendo of public and legislative pressure, there is no public evidence the State Department has finalized a CPC re-designation for Nigeria. USCIRF+2Representative Riley Moore+2
What’s new (this week)
-
Congressional pressure intensified: On October 6, 2025, Rep. Riley Moore sent a formal letter urging Secretary of State Marco Rubio to redesignate Nigeria as a CPC, explicitly citing sustained attacks on Christian communities. Representative Riley Moore
-
New Senate legislation: Sen. Ted Cruz introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025 (S.2747), legislation that would require enhanced U.S. action — including accountability measures for Nigerian officials alleged to tolerate or facilitate religiously-motivated violence. The bill was introduced in September and has been referred to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Congress.gov+1
-
USCIRF’s standing call: USCIRF has repeatedly recommended that the Secretary of State designate Nigeria as a CPC in its 2025 reporting and press statements, citing events earlier in the year that the commission says meet the CPC threshold of “systematic, ongoing, and egregious” violations. USCIRF’s country update and related materials document their rationale. USCIRF+1
Where the State Department stands
The State Department’s most recent public CPC designations (the official list posted on the State Department site) have not shown a public change adding Nigeria as of the latest published updates; there has been no formal, public announcement that a redesignation has been made. That means — for now — the push remains in the advocacy and legislative stages rather than an implemented U.S. foreign-policy action. State Department
The debate: persecution vs. complex insecurity
Analysts and major news outlets are stressing that Nigeria’s security landscape is complex. Some experts and datasets show victims of violence across religious lines and emphasize factors such as banditry, ethnic conflict, farmer-herder clashes, and Islamist insurgency — complicating efforts to classify the violence strictly as state-tolerated religious persecution. These analytical counterpoints are being cited by critics of an immediate CPC labeling. AP News+1
Editor's note: All the violence and terrorist attacks are encouraged and supported by the government because the government allowed free movement through the borders especially in the northern region. The government pay ransom to these terrorist groups to free kidnapped persons, they also integrate these terrorists into their military and equip them to continue the Christian genocide.
What designation would mean
A CPC designation under the International Religious Freedom Act obliges the U.S. to take “appropriate remedial measures,” which can include diplomatic naming, restrictions on assistance, or targeted sanctions on officials found responsible for or complicit in particularly severe violations of religious freedom. Given Nigeria’s importance as a security and economic partner in West Africa, the U.S. must weigh these measures against broader strategic considerations. ERLC+1
Reaction in Nigeria
Nigerian government and church leaders have offered mixed responses: some religious leaders and civil society actors welcome external pressure and recognition of the crisis; the government has rejected characterizations that frame the violence as purely religious persecution and argues the situation is dominated by criminality, terrorism, and intercommunal conflict. Catholic News Agency+1
Editor's note: The Nigeria government is equally complicit in the criminality, terrorism and intercommunal conflict within the country and seen in the recent government effort to pardon all categories of devil deeds in Nigeria.
Bottom line / What to watch next
-
State Department announcement: Watch the State Department’s CPC page and press office for any formal redesignation — that would be the definitive signal. State Department
-
Congressional action: Follow developments on S.2747 and H.Res.220 (and accompanying letters) — committee hearings or votes could increase pressure on the executive branch. Congress.gov+1
-
USCIRF and NGO reports: New or amplified incident reporting from USCIRF, Open Doors, and other monitors could shift the public record and influence policy. USCIRF+1
