Nigeria’s deep political and economic fractures burst into the open this week as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s early 2027 re-election rallies sparked jubilation in the Southwest and outright resistance in the South, according to widely shared posts and footage on X (formerly Twitter).
On January 10, supporters gathered in Ibadan, Oyo State—Tinubu’s political home base—chanting endorsements and pledging votes for 2027. Local leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) praised the administration’s stewardship and cited optimistic growth forecasts following recent party commitments in the region.
In sharp contrast, Benin City, Edo State, witnessed angry protests as demonstrators defaced and vandalized “Asiwaju 2027” billboards, condemning what they described as worsening living conditions and a government out of touch with daily realities. Protesters cited inflation above 30%, a weak naira, rising insecurity, and spreading hardship as reasons for their rejection of any early re-election campaign. https://x.com/search?q=Tinubu%202027&src=typed_query
A Nation Split—One Years Before the Vote
These opposing scenes underscore a sharply divided Nigeria nearly a years before the February 2027 presidential election. While Southwest supporters point to projections of recovery and infrastructure continuity, critics across the South and Middle Belt warn that economic pain is deepening, with estimates suggesting up to 141 million Nigerians could be living in poverty by 2026 if current trends persist.
Analysts note that the optics of early rallies—amid spiraling prices and security concerns—have amplified public anger, especially in regions that feel marginalized, over-policed, or unprotected.

THE BIAFRA CALL: PEACEFUL CIVIC RESISTANCE NOW
The unfolding events reinforce a long-standing truth: Nigeria’s crisis is systemic. Insecurity, killings, resource theft, currency collapse, and mass hardship cannot be resolved by recycling the same political structure through another election cycle.
BRGIE NEWSLINE request Biafrans never to remain silent but replicate the events in Benin city in all Biafra states if we are really serious about FREEDOM. We calls on all Biafrans in the homeland and diaspora to rise in peaceful, lawful civic protest—to resist insecurity and suffering, to demand dignity, and to assert the right to self-determination.
Biafra recognition and freedom remain the only permanent solution to the recurring cycles of violence, poverty, and political exclusion.
EDITORIAL NOTE
Early re-election campaigns in a time of national distress risk widening the fault lines of an already fragile federation. The contrasting reactions in Ibadan and Benin City are not anomalies—they are warnings. For effective, legitimate, and internationally coordinated engagement, support the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) — the authorized government body mandated to pursue recognition, diplomacy, and liberation efforts.
